That photo of that Montana Lake that made its way around Tumblr a few days back made me decide to go digging  through old photos.
This is a snapshot of one of  the lakes in Jiuzhaigou Valley in the Yunnan region of China.
As I had mentioned before, the almost supernaturally bright colors of the lakes are due to high mineral content of the mountain water that feeds the valley. The water is also much deeper than it looks since its high clarity means you can see straight to the bottom. Not much can live in the mineral-rich waters (the water is so hard that kidney stones were a common problem in indigenous people who drew their water from the mountain lakes and rivers) so the water stays clear and anything that falls in like tree trunks calcify and do not rot.
